I don’t care what gets that fool off the air as long as he’s gone for good

Kevin gets his wish.

I'm trying to piece this together from various sources, but Matthews opened his show announcing that this (Monday's) show would be his last, and delivered an spiel. And then they went to break and when MSNBC returned, all that was there was Steve Kornacki. And it appears Kornacki is vamping to fill the remainder of the scheduled hour.

His opening is attached, because that's the only way I could get it at this moment.

Wait an f-ing minute... the gave Tweety airtime to sing one last aria? Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad he’s “retiring,” but the little turd didn’t deserve a farewell monologue.

As my son likes to say, "You get what you get and you don't throw a fit."

I have not been able to play the audio from the attached clip, but I think Steve Kornacki's facial expression says more than any words ever could.

List of people who also need to “retire” as they might have started out with talent and good intentions but are now just in-the-way:

Lorne Michaels
Bill Maher
Ricky Gervais
Michael Moore

It appears Matthews did not warn anyone at MSNBC that this was his last show, just announced it. Reports are he has been in negotiations to retire for a few months now, and recent allegations and bad behavior accelerated that. I suspect when it became clear they were not going to let him work to at least the conventions he decided to just pack it in.

I thought Kornacki did a good job, clearly off the cuff, though he get dinged in some quarters for being too celebratory of CM. I have felt Matthews has always been over hyped (long before Hardball). I don’t think he is quite as horrible as some make him out to be now (in terms of his on air performance, no knowledge of his creepiness/assault hx), but he clearly exceeded his expiration date some years ago.

Right before it happened, journalist Laura Bassett confided to GQ comments he'd made to her as he was getting makeup put on for a 2016 show.

On a Vanity Fair podcast Friday (24), he acknowledged Bassett was right.
