Nell Scovell Gets An Apology From Dave

Ten years ago Nell Scovell wrote an article in Vanity Fair about being on the writing staff of Late Show and what changes he could make. Dave didn't read it.

She recently had a chance to talk with him.

I love this piece, and what it says about both of them. I have a few bits to pick with her (I won’t go into the problematic formula “believe women”), but overwhelmingly she seems to get most things right. And Dave is both not nearly as good as he should have been (and as we wanted him to be) and better than almost anybody else in his position.

The #metoo movement is about power in the workplace and the inequities that come from a power imbalance. The early article was a grievance. The new article is about stepping back, discussing the imbalance, and thinking collectively about to change it. Dave was being held to account for his behavior but Nell did not demand he fix it on his own.
