This conversation just happened in my house.

Matthew (my six year old): What's that song about California from The Simpsons?
(set up: my son knows a lot about The Simpsons, because that's my wife and I's favorite show, and he's seen so much that it's probably spectacularly inappropriate)

Me (on my laptop after an emotionally exhausting week for so many reasons): (Googles "simpsons california song") That would be Phantom Planet.

My wife: (taps away at her phone) (ten seconds later, starts playing "California" from Phantom Planet, AKA the theme from "The OC").

Matthew and I: (start dancing to a song we've been hearing for years, but haven't actually heard in full).

TV, for all its faults, can sometimes be awesome.

Have a lovely weekend, all.

(Did my son, upon hearing the song, pull up the exact episode it's from? Hell yes! When they got to the audio clip, did we start dancing again? You bet your ass!)

I have not seen that simpsons ep.   Although I *do* know the song from The OC very well as our family watched all 4 seasons on DVD (rented from Blockbuster!) one summer cottage rental vacation over 4 weeks.

Aside.... but related.  Not sure if I've mentioned this before.   I have 3 kids (now in their 20's).   Age gap goes like this.... Boy1... 4 year gap.... Girl1... 2 year gap... Boy2.  Six years between oldest and youngest.
As parents, we didn't let Boy1 watch The Simpsons until, perhaps Grade 8 (Age 13 or so).   Honestly can't remember why -- probably because Bart was a brat.    Six years go by, and Boy2 is in grade 9.  What's he watching?   Breaking Bad.   whatever.

So... dear list... What's your example of household TV-policy relaxation over the years?

I grew up on a regular diet of Johnny Carson Tonight Shows in the 70s.
