Had this on in the background whilst doing household chores… mostly forgettable performances. But Susannah Hoffa and Stevie Wonder both in their own ways blew the roof off the place. Biggest surprise of the night was Dave Matthews cover of “You Can Call Me Al” that I did not expect to work but he totally nailed it. Paul Simon singing at the end was nice. At 81-years-old (same birthday as me, just a few decades earlier), Simon still puts on a show.

Sidenote: A few of the “Paul Simon” songs performed on the concert originally featured Garfunkel, and the distinct absence of any mention of his contribution was, if not disrespectful, odd.

Available on Paramount +

I’d hope Susanna Hoffs blew the roof off with “Hazy Shade of Winter” – The Bangles covered it on the Less Than Zero soundtrack 35 years ago.

She mentioned that, and she can still vocalize it 35-years-later.

I suspect that having it on in the background increased your enjoyment, as you didn't have to endure watching the constant cuts to audience reactions that seemed completely fake.

That’s standard for those sorts of shows. Usually, those cutaways are used in post-production when a camera is jostled or when performers move unexpectedly out of frame. The handheld camera pointed at the audience almost always has an isolated recording so they can use it as needed/wanted. It does get overused on shows, because it is easier to cut those in instead of multiple rehearsals to avoid needing them.

Is it also standard to encourage the audience members to overreact to whatever's happening in the performance? Before I forced myself to look away, it sure seemed like their behavior was not spontaneous. ("Hey, you want to be in the broadcast? Why don't you get up and dance and sing along?")

I came in roughly half-way into the show, and wasn't sure if I should check out what I missed, since I figureed they saved the best for later.  It sounds like I should go back, as I missed both Hoffs and Stevie.  Thank ye.

It's also available on CBS.com, but I'd guess it goes away after a while to be behind the Paramount + paywall.

Colbert's and British Jimmy's work goes there after a week's worth of new shows. Plan accordingly.
