Unless people at the networks are starting to test positive for the virus, I can think of no other good reason for this decision. All of Broadway is going to be unemployed... there’s no shortage of talent to book.

Seth Meyers mentioned there was at least one cancellation at the front of the "A Closer Look" segment they would have aired tonight (H/T HuffPo):

Watching the Colbert monologue now.  They went without audience tonight (was originally going to be Monday), and he's doing it from behind the desk.  Dr. Sanjay Gupta is the main guest, though it's possible comedian Maria Bamford makes an appearance.

OK, Colbert seems to have taped rehearsal and sipped a lot of the bourbon behind the desk.  It's entertaining, but definitely still rehearsal.

Incredibly, the most obviously spliced episode ever still carried the "live on tape" announce.

I'm about 15 minutes in, and I can barely watch for how much head-shaking (in disbelief) I'm doing.

He pulls it together for the Gupta interview, thankfully.

It reminds me of how difficult it is to:

Do a live show four-five times a week, and
Make it seem like it's unplanned/unpredictable and still be funny/entertaining.

The thing the PAs always yell at audiences at the Ed is how much of the show the audience is, and a show like tonight's is proof of that. So much of that material just died without 400 saps cackling at it. If Colbert does tape next week, I think the show would be well-advised to move out of the Ed and into smaller venues: the offices upstairs, the dressing rooms, the greenroom, maybe even Angelo's next door or a a bar. There's no point in throwing stuff out into the void for no reason.

Interestingly, even though NBC!Jimmy and Seth have already cancelled their tapings for the foreseeable future, there's been no news about SNL. They're dark this week, but if memory serves, they were supposed to be live next Saturday with John Krasinski as host (promoting a movie which has, in related news, had its release pushed back - making him the 2nd host in a row in that predicament). My gut says that if they stopped production on "Tonight" and "Late Night", which could conceivably be done with skeleton crews, then SNL has to be called off, since there's NO way to do a stripped-down version of that show (unless you just do 90 minutes of Weekend Update).

On a related note - has there been any word about TDS or LWT? I know audiences are off the table, but I don't remember seeing anything about either show suspending production.

IIRC, Krasinski is schedule to host the Mar 28 show; they’re dark this weekend and next. One assumes they’re taking it day by day.

I don’t think Trevor could do his shtick without an audience, at least not as effectively. If Oliver brings Andy Zaltzman as a cohost, I think he can function without a crowd. Otherwise, no.

NBC Jimmy also did a no-audience show. Sett cancelled the show but put a new A Closer Look online.

ABC Jimmy already had Mayor Pete scheduled to be a guest host on Thursday. He had Patrick Stewart on to flog Picard. I now know what it would look like if Sheldon Cooper ever hosted a talk show.

It reminded me of when Dave had shingles and the Late Show had guest hosts every night. With a bigger ego Pete would have canceled (out of an "abundance of caution") and let ABC show a rerun. For being a minimally prepared host in front of a live theater he did a good job.

John Oliver did a decent job tonight on Last Week Tonight. Full episode on the show’s YouTube page.

While Colbert is advertised as a rerun tonight, it isn't really.  He does a monologue from home, with some virtual assistance from staff, since there are the same level of stills and video clips you see in a regular show.

While a *much* more professional endeavor than last Thursday's taped rehearsal, there are a few things that make me think Stephen won't do well during an extended home stay.

The second segment is also new, another in the semi-regular annoying series where one of his producers has his easily excitable mom interview people.  Colbert emphasizes that it was taped 8 days ago.  And the doctor she talks to was pretty good.

I have no idea how long this will continue.

While I like a lot of what Colbert does, those segments with the mother make me want to throw things through the television screen. I'd rather be trapped in an elevator with Kristen Wiig.

I'm in (what I assume) is the middle of the monologue, and it's truly painful, especially the pauses for the (non-existent) laughs. Mark Evanier suggested last week that Colbert try doing the show from home, Skyping in guests, but if this is the level of broadcast that would result, I'd prefer blessed silence.
