The new band for the Late Night program will be led by...Fred Armisen?

The article doesn't suggest - at least I don't read it that way - that the late night band will be the Ian Rubbish of the URL.  (FWIW, I saw Armisen as Rubbish in Santa Monica last October and didn't care for it.)

Regardless, I think the CBS Orchestra, The Roots and The Basic Cable Band have nothing to worry about.  The Shy Guys, on the other hand...

Personally, if I wanted a band for my late-night talk show, he's
definitely not the first "Portlandia" cast member I'd approach. (Maybe
not even the second, if Kyle MacLachlan can play an instrument.)

Conceding my own animosity of all things SNL, does Armisen have ANY musical pedigree, at least something in the spirit of Shaffer, Weinberg, or The Roots? Or is he just going to be a sidekick who happens to clang a cowbell?

According to Sepinwall, Armisen is a first-rate musician. Go figure.

My sense, based on seeing him at Jack Black's comedy/music festival last fall, was that he can play, but he's nothing special musically.  So I think he'd be in between the two positions you describe.

As for being Paul to Seth's Dave in the comedic sense, who knows?

And +1 to Jim's point.

I saw Armisen and Brownstein some time ago doing some kind of promo interview for Portlandia in which he went out of his way to say that it was both of them, and not just Brownstein, who had gone from music into comedy. I thought maybe he was joking, and then looked into it a bit and saw that he had started out as a musician (drummer?), though I am not sure how successfully.

See, it's funny, because my first thought wasn't "Ian Rubbish" when I heard this news...

It was Lawrence Welk.

He was the drummer for this band:

But he's no Skitch Henderson.

Sorry to bump this, but it does explain why I posted once about one of the myriad of substitutes for him: https://groups.google.com/g/tvornottv/c/QI1kh4q3TH0/m/DYanxWooAQAJ (link)     B

No...without a little exposition for context, it really doesn't explain why.  🙂

Short answer, and only a guess on my part: Lorne won't admit to having canned Armisen from the band, lest he be shown the door by NBC.

Is there a reason Lorne would have been pushed to fire Armisten? I know he used him for Schmigadoon, which was also an NBCU production, so it seems a little odd (unless something's come up recently that hasn't been made public...)

There are some bold suppositions made here: Armisen was supposed to be the permanent drummer for the band and he somehow got fired. Weh Late Night started he was still doing Portlandia and he may well live on the west coast so his deal with Seth was that he would play with the band when he was available and in New York. During the COVID period Armisen could contribute remotely like the other band members.

Since 1975 NBC executives have frequently come and gone, especially as the network switched owners. Lorne has stayed constant and he's figured out a way to deal with network interference. It's silly to think that any exec can force Lorne to comply with their whims.

Well, Armisen was on the bandstand when Meyers resumed live shows tonight, so I guess either Lorne has more clout with the Peacock than was speculated, or there was never any pressure to fire Armisen.

I admit that I don’t scan the  wire for entertainment news as religiously as some of us seem to do, but this newsgroup has literally been the only place I saw any mention of even the possibility that Armisen’s job on Late Night was in Jeopardy.  It always seemed to me that Armisen had an agreement with the show that he was free to travel and work other projects, but that he would perform with the Late Night house band anytime he was available.  I haven’t seen anything recently that has caused me to change that assumption.
