Colbert Again

I started watching Colbert again Inauguration night, and again last night, hope to resume the regular habit. As the Reckoning, the Virus and Trumpism ramped up in late Spring, I found I could not yuck it up with Colbert anymore. 

Where is he doing the show now, is that his Office at the Ed? 

I saw Brian Williams joke (though wouldn’t be surprised if many network anchors had their own version) Inauguration Day that usually we remark at the end of a presidency on how old and wrecked the outgoing President looked, as a marker of the toll the job takes, but this time around, Trump looks the same, and all the reporters who covered him look old and wrecked.

Colbert looks old and wrecked.

I've found that Colbert (and Meyers) have been good for reminding me that all the stuff that seemed insane was, in fact, insane. But now that the insanity is receding, we're left with the LSwSC sense of humor, which isn't to my taste.

It's in the office building, but a recreation of his office that's probably more suited to having a safely-distanced crew.

I don't get why Colbert hasn't done his show from inside the studio from the Ed whereas Fallon, Meyers, Kimmel and Corden have since gone back to theirs. Is it because Colbert's studio is technically inside a broadway theater?

Maybe for the same reason it's being called "A Late Show," not "The Late Show"? Doesn't consider it the REAL "The Late Show," worthy of being produced in the regular studio, unless they can have a full audience and all the other normal trappings?

On a related note, Andy Richter recently tweeted a photo showing Stage 15 at Warner Bros. empty, and some other "Conan" writers tweeted about having cleaned out their offices on the lot. This presumably means that, no matter what, they're planning to finish the run of "Conan" in their temporary home at the Coronet Theater (which could have an audience if they're allowed again, although at the rate Los Angeles and California are vaccinating people...), and then find new studio and office space once the new weekly variety show begins production.

Which was the reason why during a WGA strike, Jon Stewart was calling "TDS" "A Daily Show."

And AFAIK, Trevor Noah is still in his apartment and "TDS" is still "The Daily Social Distancing Show."

British Jimmy is back at Studio 56 at TV CIty after a week in his garage, Kimmel's still at home, Lilly Singh's doing her season at home until they can do audiences again (and doing topical material that she didn't do when they were taping close to game show levels of taping per day last season).  And Maher's back at Studio 33 with his staff acting as audience.  With Bee back at the CBS Broadcast Center, it now remains to be seen if John Oliver will be back next month when his season starts or if he will remain in his unspecified "white void" (which I suspect is his garage).

The theater was re-acquired by CBS to enable Letterman's show (the musical that was based there, closed for lack of available alternative), so that's on them and their unions, AOT The B'way League and theirs.   B

Dreamtime was considered a Broadway show, but I don’t think the Ed was technically a permanent Broadway house, seeing as it had been used primarily as a radio/TV studio since the 30s.

And the theater had been gutted by Reeves Teletape and Unitel while they ran the place. The stage and seating area had been ripped out, including the balcony.  When I watched "Kate and Allie," which shot at the Ed, it was noticeable that the room's natural reverb, noticeable on every show shot at the Ed from Sullivan to "Pyramid," had been muffled.  And if you can get to see an "MTV Unplugged" episode shot at the Ed, the lack of traditional seating is noticeable.  CBS made the studio a theater again for Letterman.
