Nellie: "For many series, including all or almost all CBS, NBC and the CW shows and some ABC and Fox ones, a decision was made right away that this was it for the current seasons, and the remaining 1-2 episodes won’t be filmed this spring. As the COVID-19 outbreak situation remains uncertain and unpredictable, holding onto the crews for weeks in hope to film one more episode is hard to justify financially, and restarting production involves a big expense too."

Guessing the remake of The Stand has also stopped production.

Oh, irony.

Any word on what Idol and The Voice will do when they get to scheduled live shows? Even going no audience would probably put them over the 50 person limit.

I’m almost certain all productions are either stopped or scaled way back.

Right. So these shows have a preliminary phase where shows are recorded, and a later phase where shows are live. I’m not sure where they are in production schedule, but guessing they are pretty close to having completed the recorded phase, and waiting for the live shows. Even more than might be the case for scripted shows that have their finale’s cancelled, it will be awkward if these singing shows keep broadcasting the recorded preliminaries, only to get to the part where the live shows are supposed to start and instead have to say “never mind.”

I guess they could go on hiatus till June or July (unless, as is possible, things are even worse than we hope), but that would introduce such a gap that good chance some contestants won’t be able to participate (and of course, some might test positive for C-19).

So I notice they addressed this on Idol two episodes ago; Seacrest appeared on screen, maybe from his home, and explained the show about to be shown (first of the Hawaii shows) had been shot in January. Maybe The Voice is in a similar schedule.

If Live Shows don’t have to start until May it is not impossible they could still go on in some kind of modified way, maybe a little delayed. My CA county has extended its stay at home order through the end of April. At my hospital we are making telephone appointments into mid May, and it looks like they envision us working from home for at least a month, plausibly longer. MLB things it is going to start back in June. It’s hard to imagine thousands of people in a studio audience watching a concert in Los Angeles any time soon the way things are now (maybe no audience, but just cast and crew who pass health checks?) though it would have been hard to imagine how we do things now two months ago.

I really enjoyed that iHeart concert; maybe they will try doing the live shows from people’s homes?

I guess they can’t re-edit these taped shows. Given the amount of emotional pain and anxiety I deal with every day (and probably most Americans are dealing with in every day life) My emotional state these days is such that I wouldn’t mind if they only showed the happy stories of people getting the good news they made it. I was embarrassed to find myself tearing up when one of the girls got a “No” just now, which is not my normal state when watching these shows.

Obviously this at the bottom of anyone’s priority list, and my life will go on just fine even if there only a Top 20 (or whatever it is) this season and no winner. I’m just interested in how they are going to address this. Also, I guess I’d like to imagine that we are able to get back to some kind of normalcy by mid to late May.

I'm doing what I can to keep up on science and the pandemic and what is now clear is that the guidance about behavior and social distancing changes rapidly. When the virus first emerged epidemiologists needed to provide guidance according to how the virus was transmitted, at what stage it was most infectious, and other factors. The original guidance came from experience with SARS and MERS which were also coronaviruses. The problem is that the current coronavirus is different and they have to gather and interpret the data about it at the same time they have to establish guidelines. So when something new is learned, like people spread the most virus out before they show symptoms requires a change in guidance. These discoveries are coming all the time and the guidance will change rapidly.

In other words anybody making plans about when society is going to reopen is just guessing wildly.

If I had to hazard a guess, the only way to do live shows while complying with stay-at-home orders would be to essentially do what the late night shows are doing, and send equipment to the contestants so they can rehearse remotely and perform from their homes.  Whether that's practical is one issue; whether it's worthwhile for the producers is another entirely.  The better option might be to punt the live shows into the summer and hope that confinement/gathering restrictions are lifted (NBC, at least, will need something to fill the time during the summer, since they not only don't have American Ninja Warrior and, I'm guessing, AGT, but now the Olympics are out too), although as Tom noted, that's anyone's guess at this point.

I've made no secret on this board that I'm a pro wrestling fan - as such, I've been keeping an eye on what they've been doing over the last month, as both WWE and AEW have been producing new shows in empty spaces (in WWE's case, their Performance Center in Orlando; in AEW's case, an event space in Jacksonville, FL, although they recently had to decamp to a wrestling school in GA after their Jax location ended up adjacent to a COVID testing site).  AEW is rumored to have banked a few weeks worth of shows before GA's stay-at-home order closed them down; WWE had also banked some material in the run-up to the pre-taped, 2 night, empty-arena Wrestlemania this past weekend, but I haven't seen any info on how much material they've banked going forward.  That being said, I don't know how practical it would be to continue producing new material - WWE has already had some big names sidelined with COVID diagnoses (The Miz & Rey Mysterio the most notable) - and given that pro wrestling is the literal opposite of social distancing, even assuming they could get around the stay-at-home order, I'm not sure it's ethical for them to ask their employees...sorry, independent contractors to keep working int he current environment.

I can tell you that there's just something creepy about wrestling emanating from a largely-empty building - it's a bit like playing a video game with the commentary track on but all other sounds off - although I imagine that would be true for just about any live sport, save maybe golf.

It is wild guessing, though many sectors of society do have to make their best wild guess. In my work we have adjusted work flow and setting four times in a month, sometimes changing only over a matter of days (and my employer is the largest health care provider in California).

I made appointments today for early May, and they were are for telephone sessions, assuming we will still all be at home. If I had to make appointments for early June, I think I might go with office appointments. In both cases, we would have to be prepared not only to be wrong, but maybe even, in retrospect, laughably wrong.

I suspect AI is making some kind of provisional plan right now for the live shows. My guess is, if they can flex it to June, they would be planning on studio shows with some kind of limited audience. If they need to get it on the air in mid to late May, then some kind of singing from home option, perhaps with an abbreviated structure.

If you made office appointments based on an official prediction about when distancing will end and you have to convert them to phone appointments that's not a huge burden on you. It's another story for small businesses trying to manage employees based on those predictions or major logistical affairs like sports leagues, concert tours, or political conventions who will suffer real consequences if they commit to a new starting date and have to delay again.

Well, I will pass on the consequences of having to change appointments for hundreds of patients in my clinic, my point is that the TV production companies have to make a decision either way. Planning now not to have live shows in June is just as much a commitment of resources as planning now not to do live shows in June. I expect they are planning to do shows, since that is the plan that is easiest to change closer to the date.
