The public-affairs network isn't planning to become a for-profit after years of covering Wa(r)shington, but are "looking to better cover operational costs in a world where it is becoming harder to monetize traditional channels reliant only on dwindling license fees"...

Back when I first got cable, C-SPAN did run PBS-style underwriting announcements until they were on enough cable systems to be able to survive on subscribers fees.  It's obvious they're going to avoid putting ads on the channels as long as they can, especially considering that their core audience will probably not be happy about seeing advertising on God Bless C-SPAN, but if the cable TV industry is on the ropes (and it's mostly their fault), they'll have to do something.
