The current streamer's customers will be migrated to the NBCU service's premium tier, which will be a better deal in terms of monthly costs...

This is a bit of a headscratcher for me, since the move to the 'Cock means WWE is no longer in control of their own OTT outlet - although maybe that's the point.  (I'm also assuming the Krusty the Klown rule applies...)

The calculations for these things must be along the lines of:

X: Do it ourselves - (relatively) modest number of subscribers x decent monthly fee
Y: Work with a partner - (relatively) large subscriber base x smaller monthly fee

If X > Y then do it yourself. If Y > X then take the money you're being offered assuming you get some good terms and a longish deal.

Whenever anyone asks why a major sports league (eg NFL in the US, EPL in the UK) doesn't go it alone and launch their own platform, it's usually because working with a partner or partners is much more beneficial.

From the article: "Nothing will change for WWE Network subscribers outside the U.S."

It should be pointed out that all of North America's major professional leagues except Major League Soccer own and operate their own linear cable channels that present a varying number of live telecasts (Turner Sports operates NBA TV). Also, I believe the rules that waive antitrust rules for the NFL state that all telecasts of games must be sponsored (including the Amazon streams), which stopped HBO when they tried to go after Monday Night Football some years ago.

Mark - I don't think that would apply to WWE, since a) they're not TECHNICALLY a competitive sport (rather, "sports entertainment TM"), and b) they're NOT a monopoly in the strictest sense (they're not as large, but IMPACT, AEW and Ring of Honor all have national TV clearances).
