He was "so done" with the impressions the other week... then after ex-gov Huckabee cheered his apparent plans, Baldwin ripped right back at him and his spokesperson-daughter, but when satradio talker Dean Obeidallah in a CNN op-ed suggested that without him, Trump wins, he backed off...

Baldwin’s Trump sketches have a surprisingly poor hit ratio, especially considering what an easy target they have. Unlike Tina Fey’s Palin, which really zeroed in on a few key  elements of her character and effectively defined her for much of the country, Baldwin can’t seem to settle on the 2 or 3 things about Trump that he wants to focus on and illuminate. If it is just about making fun of the most recent thing he has said/tweeted, Colbert’s approach is better and more timely.

But the real point here for me is Huckabee (the Elder). Dude has really taken things to all-time lows in terms of morality, class, and logic. Has Jon Stewart ever commented on the deterioration of a man JS once positioned as a reasonable and common sense conservative progressives could respect and converse with?

While I don't share Kevin's antipathy toward Baldwin as an actor There's no advantage in having him do Trump Doing a caricature rather than a character gets stale quickly. In the past SNL stayed in house for their political caricatures and the expectations from Dana Carvey or Darrell Hammond weren't quite as high. According to Huckabee if Balswin stops playing Trump, Trump wins, but I'd say if Baldwin continues to play Trump we lose. So we're stuck either way.

I read the Deadline article and saw it was all based on tweets. As much as I dislike news stories just being rewrites of press releases I dislike news stories being quotes of hot takes or juvenile spats on Twitter.
