The fare device, made of a plastic that might never degrade nor be completely reclaimable, will be retired by the end of this year, the New York State agency's chairman Janno Lieber announced today... they will continue to be accepted by turnstiles and fareboxes for the time being, as there are still many left to be replaced...

Its replacement OMNY uses contactless technology, so I for one can use a debit card if I'm careful...
