A new Kickstarter campaign launched today. They’ve already raised a quarter of their initial goal.

One important difference this time around is that Joel is looking to not only fund new episodes, but also a new distribution channel (the "Gizmoplex", which will also figure into the new episodes) so he's not reliant on a network/streaming service (thereby retaining greater control).

As the wise Mr. Phillip J. Fry once said, "Shut up and take my money."

If Joel buys/owns the rights to post the entire MST3k archive on-demand and utilizes the app for new episodes and live streaming, I can see the benefit of yet another app or media player. But if it is just for new material, no thanks.

I get that Joel had his reasons for a new cast, but just as the charm of Top Gear was the chemistry of the hosts, the charm of MST3k was the dynamic of the cast. Replacing one cast member every few years during the show’s original run was tolerable, but the fully rebooted Netflix cast hurt the franchise. I still liked the reboot, but it wasn’t what I actually wanted. To each his/her own, but put Joel, Kevin, Trace, and Frank (Mike optional) on the show in their original positions, and it’ll make Misties happy. Anything less, and it doesn’t seem worth the fundraising dollars.

Putting aside casting issues (I personally think they should have ditched Jonah/Baron/Hampton and used the Live Tour cast, but YMMV)...

IIRC, Shout Factory now owns the rights to the full back catalog (although certain episodes remain out of circulation due to larger rights issues), and that acquisition was done at Joel’s behest (or at least with his blessing). The Netflix episodes were produced by Joel’s company, although they may remain exclusive to Netflix for a while.

Welp, if Oswalt is involved, I won't be. Good luck to them.

A few of the Netflix MST3K episodes have popped up on IFC during random hours (I know IFC showed "Starcrash" and "Mac & Me" with the segments), so those two seasons may not be as exclusive as we think.
