In a Friday column in Britain's Sun paper, he suggested that Prince Harry's "control" has been lost thanks to his spouse... the kicker was a stinky Game of Thrones reference... even his daughter distanced herself from the commentary... no comment from his TV employer Amazon...

It’s getting so you can’t be a vicious racist and mysogynist in public anymore.

And nothing, I guess, from Sony or ITV, for which he does the reboot of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?"

Wow. As is often the case, the half-assed apology is nearly as bad as the original comment (only nearly because, Holy Cow the original comment was so bad. Even in the context of the show, and how horrible a character she was, that scene still felt difficult to watch).

I don’t care that much about any branch of the British Royal Family, but to have and express this much focused and intense violent, sadistic hatred for someone who at worst is a B cable television actress literally has no other possible explanation than that the speaker is a monstrous misogynistic racist. An apology that basically takes the form of “I’m sorry I used Game of Thrones to express my racist misogyny” does more to confirm than excuse the character of the man who uttered it.

Plus, I really like Nicola Sturgeon…

Not going to defend Clarkson, but his entire career is built upon antagonistic hyperbole. That’s his gimmick… to be bombastic and rude.  It’s the Don Rickles concept expanded to include op-eds and motor-sports. He says things deliberately to get a reaction, then gladly smiles and issues empty apologies. He’s done this for decades. People keep giving him forums to do it. And people keep reacting shocked when he does it, as if they were expecting him to not do what he’s done for decades.

I barely know who he is (I did try to watch Top Gear for a few episodes several years ago and could not get what all the fuss was about.

But not sure I buy the Rickles analogy. It’s one thing to make watermelon jokes about Sammy Davis Jr; but I don’t recall Don ever going on a rant about, say, how much he hated Diahann Carroll when she was the first Black woman to Star in her own sitcom, and talk about how much he would like to see her get raped repeatedly like so many racists threatened to actually do to her in the hate mail she received.

UK press watchdog IPSO says 10,000 complaints against Clarkson are filed there, but itv boss Kevin Lygo -- despite calling the sitch "awful" -- said his "Millionaire" job is safe... "at the moment"...

The Sun withdraws the column from its website/archives, for the reason just mentioned...

That doesn’t excuse them from choosing to publish it in the first place.

I believe it was revealed the last time Clarkson had to apologize for an article he wrote that his contract stipulates they cannot refuse to publish one of his articles without paying a substantial penalty

A virtual presser for Clarkson's Farm was called off, after a new apology from the host on IG, and a Variety report that The Grand Tour will also end after the coming season... he also revealed in the post he'd emailed Harry and Meghan to personally apologize Christmas morning...

They are averaging one episode of Grand Tour every 18 months or so… the writing was already on the wall.

It sounds like everyone's doing the contractual minimum with Clarkson right now. Amazon had already ordered a third series of Clarkson's Farm, and I suspect that'll go ahead. The Grand Tour just isn't what it once was, and now it's reported that a celebrity run of Who Wants to be a Millionaire which was due to be recorded next month has been cancelled. The regular series is still going to be taped. I would not be surprised if ITV rests the format and finds a new host.

For all his weak apologies, the truth is that outside the UK, the public is behind Harry and Meghan, and there's no reason for Amazon to want to be working with someone who's taken the other side. The reason that column got published, unfortunately, is because the popular press here in the UK is still very much Team Monarchy and doesn't like Harry and Meghan.

I've said before, that personally I couldn't give a damn about any of them, but that doesn't mean I *hate* the two of them. Honestly, good luck to them with whatever they do. I have no interest. But I do care about popular newspapers behaving so callously towards anyone. That column got published despite a sub-editor and quite probably a senior editor seeing it first and thinking, "Yup - that's fine." Because the UK popular press is virulent against them. They have published pages and pages on the book and the Netflix show.

In fact, beyond the tabloid press readership, I suspect that many others in the UK are either with the pair, or like me, don't care.

BTW, the paper that really hates them the most is the Daily Mail. Yet, that's only the printed version. What you need to understand is that, despite sharing a title and ownership, the online version of the Mail is almost entirely unrelated to the print version. They target different people, and they don't share the same world view. The site is very profitable in the US, and they know that the younger readership there likes Harry and Meghan. So the site treads carefully. On the other hand, the print paper in the UK is read largely by a much older audience, and they're completely different. It's a media form of cognitive dissonance.

Meghan is a D-list actress and Harry hasn’t even accomplished that much. They aren’t worth anybody’s attention… they aren’t important enough to insult. Clarkson thought he was punching up, which is always fair game, but he misjudged it and it turned out he was punching down. That’s what got him. If they were wearing crowns he could have pulled it off. But because they are commoners in the eyes of the public, he crossed a line. He is perhaps the most hyperbolic character in British media, so I don’t understand how or why anyone takes him seriously. But what he wrote wasn’t career-ending. He’s been slowing his career down for several years now, anyway. His career will continue to slow.
