Lalo Schifrin enjoyed a distinguished career as a composer for films and television and for arranging jazz recordings, most notably in TV for the spy drama "M:I" (his themes were heard in the scores for the Tom Cruise film series of "M:I"), "Mannix" and something not originally written for television, a piece called "Tar Sequence" for the film "Cool Hand Luke" that became better known on the ABC-owned stations (and other local news programs) as the theme for "Eyewitness News" for years (in Australia, the Nine Network still uses it for their newscasts)--his last work, an orchestral piece in tribute to his home country of Argentina, was first performed in Buenos Aries in April--complications from pneumonia on Thursday:
