Masterpiece, specifically, as a reboot of the Herriot classic is picked up by Britain's Channel Five. BBC aired the original in the late 70s and a revival in the late 80s.

Quite a classy entry for the channel best known for many years, as one of their own execs put it, "The Three Fs--films, football and f--king" (the soft core porn was dropped years ago).  Still, their highest-profile shows are still the Aussie soaps "Neighbours" and "Home and Away" (it is believed that those shows have stayed on the air primarily due to the Channel 5 deals in the UK--it hasn't helped "Neighbours" any that Network 10 in Australia runs the show on a flanker channel instead of the main channel).

These days Channel 5 is owned by Viacom, and it mostly relies on light factual series - perhaps aimed at an older audience. They still have the two Aussie soaps - Neighbours and Home and Away - and they have reruns of Friends filling up plenty of daytime (especially the weekends). They don't even show much US drama these days. NCIS and its progeny is still around, but the channel made a lot of our the CSI and Law & Order franchises at the time.

What's fascinating about this is that Channel 5 basically doesn't make any drama. They did have an Irish drama called "Blood" not that long ago. But this will be quite a step change for them.
