CBS rebukes "Mornings" anchor over tense interview

Last week Tony Dokoupil sat down with Ta-Nehisi Coates, whom in his recent book The Message, f'rinstance, "compared Israel's treatment of Palestinians to the Jim Crow laws of the American South," reported the NY Times... while the chat was civil and actually ended with an amusing line, social sites went bonkers, with Coates' fans accusing Dokoupil of bias... after he met later with network standards people, audio of the meeting leaked to the likes of Puck and Bari Weiss, wherein executive Adrienne Roark asserted the interview "[did not meet] editorial standards," but was questioned about that by CBS News legal analyst Jan Crawford...

Trevor Noah, on his What Now? podcast, followed up with Coates, and learned that Dokoupil "commandeer[ed]" the interview, not leaving much for co-hosts Gayle King and Nate Burleson, who were supposed to also be involved...

I think this is one of those things where both sides are off. Coates criticisms of Israel, while not exactly unique in the current climate, are extreme, and arguably oversimplify, distort, and minimize both Israel’s position vis a vis its Arab neighbors and the treatment of US Blacks in the Jim Crow south. His views obviously deserved tough examination, and CBS News is leaving and odd impression that tough questioning is inconsistent with its standards.

However, it is also true that Dokoupil went beyond being tough in his questioning, he was insistent, over controlling and out of balance. He has two daughters living in Israel, and while understandable, it did seem like his paternal concern bled into his questioning. This is the part that was inconsistent with CBS News standards, but they have not been clear about explaining that, I guess because their initial reaction was leaked.
