Surprise: In Pennsylvania, and not where he’s lived the last couple decades (NJ) before moving in with his Main Line in-laws last year. (Fwiw, he voted absentee in ‘20.)

No surprise: As an R.

We have had snake oil salesmen as senators in our nation’s history… it has not gone well

I repeat my “this is all Oprah’s fault” mantra, and that if history remembers her at all, it will be as a footnote to elevating the worst possible people in their fields into celebrities. Oz. Phil. Jenny McCarthy. A pox on her house.

Pennsylvania is trending blue in statewide elections. The Democrats are concentrated in Philadelphia and the eastern part of the state and in and around the city of Pittsburgh. The spread of the red part of the state makes it easy to gerrymander the legislature. But the only part of the state growing in population is along the border with New Jersey and is made up of NJ transplants.

Pat Toomey picked good years to run. He first won in 2010 and benefited from the Tea Party wave. In 2016 he joined the Trump wave. He was an insider to politics and was president of Americans for Prosperity before running for office. It’s not clear why he’s not running for another term but it could be the changing demographics and no national name or race to boost him.

Oz should start strong in the primary race because of name recognition. Unless that’s enough to deter more experienced candidates he should be in for a tough race as the others will get attention by attacking him. If that’s enough to make his numbers fall he could easily pull out of the race. But he could also somehow get the party behind him. Then he has an uphill fight against the Democratic candidate.

At least in my lifetime (since 1971), the track record of M.D.s as members of Congress is, on average, dreadful.  Not that Oz needed another reason for me to think he was powerfully unqualified to serve, but this and the whole carpetbagger business are excellent reasons to say no.

So come mid-January, affected stations can choose to replace “Dr Oz” with Daphne Oz's new show, “The Good Dish.”

Just saw my first Oz campaign ad, on 6ABC in Philadelphia... right before Final Jeopardy.
Guess that's the only way he can get back on Jeopardy.
I knew he was running, of course, but I had no idea he was advertising already. I've never seen advertising this early.
And in the ad, he and his graphics scream "Washington got it wrong on Covid" and spouts some pro-death slogans.
The primary isn't until May 17. I can't believe we have five and a half more months of this bullshit ahead. (And more if he wins.)

It’s too early for me to get interested in the details of the race and I can’t vote in the Republican primary anyway. What I have seen is that at least two of his challengers are fabulously wealthy and they’re all preparing to spend millions on getting elected.

Yep, whatta blessing that he's running for public office.  Saw his poll numbers not too long ago.  Single digits.

In the meantime, HWCNBN is running for Congress again.  So, no expected appearance on Idol this season, and apparently there's another already filmed game show episode with an uncertain future.

Oz has flooded TV with campaign ads. But he is not the only multimillionaire running for the GOP nomination so other candidate ads are also starting to appear. And there’s a SuperPAC putting out a ton of anti-Oz commercials.

Tom Wolf, the current governor, also came from outside politics. But it was at most 24 hours after he announced his campaign that he already had endorsements from all of the political leaders in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh (he’s a Democrat). Oz, or his campaign manager, has ignored endorsements and it’s keeping him from getting any traction with the rank and file Republican base.

Pennsylvania Senate Republican race between Oz and McCormick turns ugly early

Erie, Pennsylvania (CNN) -- In the Pennsylvania Senate race, one candidate is accusing a rival of having "dual loyalties" to the US and a foreign country. In turn, that rival is charging his opponent with being too cozy with China.

But these aren't candidates from opposing parties. They are hedge-fund executive David McCormick and TV personality Dr. Mehmet Oz, two of the leading contenders for the Republican nomination.

With months to go until Pennsylvania's scheduled May 17 primary, Keystone State Republicans are girding themselves for a long and bruising fight for the Senate nomination to succeed retiring GOP Sen. Pat Toomey.

Donald Trump just endorsed Dr. Oz.

Endorsement of Dr. Oz

This is all about winning elections in order to stop the Radical Left maniacs from destroying our Country. The Great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has a tremendous opportunity to Save America by electing the brilliant and well-known Dr. Mehmet Oz for the United States Senate. I have known Dr. Oz for many years, as have many others, even if only through his very successful television show. He has lived with us through the screen and has always been popular, respected, and smart. He even said that I was in extraordinary health, which made me like him even more (although he also said I should lose a couple of pounds!). He is a graduate of Harvard University and earned a joint MD and MBA from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Wharton School of Finance. He has authored more than 350 original publications, written 8 New York Times bestsellers, and received patents for developing medical devices that have improved countless lives and performed thousands of life-saving heart operations.

Dr. Oz is Pro-Life, very strong on Crime, the Border, Election Fraud, our Great Military, and our Vets, Tax Cuts, and will always fight for and support our under-siege Second Amendment. He will ensure America will become Energy Independent again. Dr. Oz also passionately believes in high-quality education and protecting parent involvement throughout the process. Perhaps most importantly, I believe that Mehmet Oz will be the one most able to win the General Election against a Radical Left Democrat looking to do unthinkable harm to our Country. Women, in particular, are drawn to Dr. Oz for his advice and counsel. I have seen this many times over the years. They know him, believe in him, and trust him. Likewise, he will do very well in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, where other candidates will just not be accepted. He knows his job is to serve every single Pennsylvanian. Dr. Oz is smart, tough, and will never let you down, therefore, he has my Complete and Total Endorsement. Good luck, Dr. Oz. our Country needs you!

Oz served a two-week stint as the guest host of Jeopardy! last spring, drawing some outrage from viewers for his past support of pseudoscientific treatments. According to the filing, Oz was paid more than $268,000 for the guest-hosting gig, with all of that money being donated to an unnamed charity.

I’m a poll worker so I keep up with this stuff. Mail in votes can’t be opened and counted until Election Day. The opening and scanning machines were bought for the 2020 election so there’s a lot of overcapacity for non-presidential elections. The opening and counting of mail in ballots starts at 7 AM and is finished by 8 PM when the polls close.

There is a small count after Election Day of late arriving ballots and provisional ballots from people who received ballots in the mail but decided to vote in person and didn’t bring the mail in ballot to surrender. The reason it’s going to take time to get a final count for yesterday’s election is that 14,000 faulty mail in ballots were sent to Lancaster County voters and the problem wasn’t identified until yesterday morning when they tried to scan the completed ballots. They are going to find a way to scan them and that will complete the vote.
