Everything about this story made me sad. I applaud Leno’s work ethic, but what is the point of working hard and achieving things if you can’t at any point enjoy it? Sure, he indulges his passion for cars, but even that is just another series of projects to keep him busy.
One aside: In the article, Leno says he only gets food from places with guys in paper hats and never has room service. To the best of my knowledge, Leno never drove off the lot for lunch the entire time he hosted The Tonight Show, and he didn’t walk across the Midway to the world famous (-ly bad) NBC commissary, so somebody delivered his food to him daily for over a quarter of a century.
I’ve never understood his insistence on maintaining this pretense that he’s just a blue collar working man. He has told the same 25 jokes for over 40 years. He hasn’t worked since I was in diapers.
