Gene's son grew up admiring "Knight Rider," not the "Trek" franchise... "but I don’t condemn (the bit) in any way.... It's all fun."

Bill's reax on the tweetybox: "Isn't presentism just wonderful? 🙄 #getalife" https://twitter.com/WilliamShatner/status/1434558263895343109 (link)

Not sure presentism applies here.  It was a one-joke bit that was executed well enough (though if you told me it was beaten to death, I wouldn't argue).  As a member of the target group I remember it being a sore spot then no more or less than it would be now.

It wouldn't bother me at all if Mr. Shatner didn't use the socials that much outside of promoting whatever project he's in, or new merch he has to sell.  It seems to encourage the cranky, old man part of him.

FWIW, last month was the centennial of Gene's birth, so between that and the show's 55th anniversary on Wednesday, Rod will likely be in the entertainment news for a little while longer.

I was pretty close to the target group at that time as well, and I remember it as hilarious, and no one in the larger ST community I knew personally was offended, though we heard of folks who were hurt.

I knew Shatner a bit for a while, as my mother ran a charity that he was involved with. He was nice to her (which is what I cared about) and professional, in that he always showed up on time and engaged with the participants (which is all my mom cared about). It was at a time in his career when he was keeping ST at arm’s length, and while he tolerated a little of my fan boi-ing when I first met him (I was a college student) he made it clear at all other contacts over the 5-7 years I would run into him that while he welcomed conversation about Hooker and, later, TekWar, he had little patience for geeky questions about ST (so I could not ask him my questions about “Assignment: Earth.”

My mother heard from other people he worked with and she had contact with that he could be kind of a jerk, but he never was with her.

Great idea, but I think he's coached on socials use...  B
