@Jimmy Kimmel: Our daughter brought us covid (even though we specifically asked her not to).

Mike Birbiglia will fill in as host, starting tomorrow.

I was sort of surprised, considering that Birbiglia is doing his one-man show in Chicago, but his next performance is not until Friday night (and he's not doing an eight-performance week, just six performances over four days a week).  He's also not doing any Sunday shows this week, meaning he could be doing Kimmel next Monday.

Colbert is out again, with Covid symptoms.

(And Jon Batiste has been out with Covid since Wednesday.)

My DVR doesn't even reflect changes for tonight and tomorrow.

Both Batiste and Colbert were at the Met Gala last Monday, so a surge in celebrity positive tests wouldn't surprise me.

Is May still sweeps?  Does that matter as much anymore?

For the affiliates, yes, since in many cases sweeps are the only time they get ratings.  For the networks, not so much anymore.

I wonder if Colbert is experiencing the phenomenon reported here:

"The Daily Show" sent out their regular e-mail list of this week's guests, but all of this week's shows were reruns.

And Marnie Stern has been missing from the 8G Band for several weeks (can't confirm her status, as the show hasn't run full end credits in all that time).

What's going on? Come on, late-night Kremlinologists, get to work!

Jon Batiste is still out with it, per Stephen during last night's show.

I'm concerned that at some point somebody on one of these shows (not just late night) will become seriously ill, if they haven't already.  I know they take measures, but you can't completely eliminate potential exposure and continue to be in production.

Semi-OT: Longtime anti-lockdown, anti-vaccine, anti-science a-hole Eric Clapton tests positive for Covid. And I’m all out of f*cks to give.

I'm also concerned about where Suleika Jaouad (Mrs. Batiste) is in her recovery from her bone marrow transplant, as noted in the “Sunday Morning” piece from a few months back….

Colbert also mentioned that Batiste will be out until he's done filming "The Color Purple," so it's probably a combination of those two and what I assume will be his eventual departure. There's also a new enclosure around the bandstand that one assumes will come down when there's a piano.

In other news, Armisen is back on drums in 8G this week after a long absence.

Marnie Stern still missing and unaccounted for; full credits ran Monday night, but the slide identifying the band was skipped.

Colbert mentioned last night - at the end of a segment where Jon Batiste did the Colbert Questionert - that Jon will be taking the rest of the summer off ("for personal time... for the best of reasons," Colbert said), with Louis Cato leading the band until September.

But are they going to redo the opening to say "Louis Cato and Stay Human?"

I'd imagine not, since they'd have to refilm the section of Batiste entering and Paramount probably isn't interested in giving them the money to do that for two or three months (though I imagine they'll have to do it eventually).

Does that mean it’s not due to poor health of Jon’s wife, or is that some weird Catholic way of saying it is?

I heard (or thought I heard) a brief mention of Jon's previously announced role in "The Color Purple" during the conversation last night.  As for Jon's wife, I wouldn't expect to hear anything absent something definitive like remission, completion of treatment, etc.

Best,
David
