Versatile as an actor and filmmaker, he was Col. Tigh on the original "Battlestar Galactica" and Sgt Broadhurst on "McCloud"... and directed a 1988 PBS biography of Duke Ellington... and served both television and motion-picture Academies... 95.

One thing that put me off the Galactica reboot was that I appreciated how many African Americans were featured in the original cast, and in the reboot they all but vanished. Carter took what should’ve been a minor role and made it prominent through shear force of acting talent. He took words that weren’t important (and in many cases not well written) and made them important. That’s a skill.
