"It is not yet clear whether SAG-AFTRA, which represents 160,000 members, will be amenable to the idea as it would require extending its negotiations for a second time."

It looks like the SAG-AFTRA strike starts at midnight.

This can really only hurt the writers guild, because the flawed perception by way too many outside the industry is that the writers are less important than the on camera talent. Which means the focus of the negotiations will now be with SAG instead of WGA. Unions show a lot of solidarity when only one is striking, but two striking unions can result in jealousies and blood feuds.

Looks like an all reality-TV fall for everyone in the meantime.

I’m not so sure about that. I was reviewing the list of shows impacted by the Writers strike and found only a handful that really impacted me (I would like to see the next season of Severance).

Unlike past strikes, which threatened or actually did rob us most quality scripted viewing options, I have a ton of shows I have never seen to choose from. They could be on strike for two years and I suspect I might not ever notice, unless Jeopardy is affected.

Not only are there so many first run premium streaming shows that I have not yet seen, but lots of vintage programs I would be happy to watch (after some years of trying I am still only have way through the classic Perry Mason shows, and I have the complete DVD set off Mannix that I am only a third of the way through season 1).

Mannix changes a lot after season 1.

Oh I know. I have fond memories of the later seasons. Looking forward to getting to them, even though always nice to see Joseph Campanella.

I had been debating literally for years whether to buy some vintage TV dramas on DVD that seemed resistant to streaming. During prime pandemic I bought The Fugitive box set and a DVD player, and counted both cheap against the pleasure. Within the last year I bought Mannix, and as noted below am not yet done with Season 1.

Sure enough, I notice today that Mannix is now streaming on Amazon, along with another vintage series I have had my eye on, Barnaby Jones (no sign yet of Cannon; and no, I don’t count ad supported streaming).

I don’t begrudge the development, but wondering how long these shows have been streaming, and if indeed it is recent, if the release was spurred on by the strike, and an attempt by Amazon to lure some of those old eyeballs that watch so many CBS procedurals?

If it'll help, MeTV has Mannix, Cannon, and Barnaby Jones on from 2:05-5 am on weeknights (or weekday mornings if you prefer).

I suppose my chief complaint about the streaming services is that they seem to have countless viewing options… except for the shows I want to watch. When I cut the cord on cable, I used that money to buy dvd box sets or season passes on iTunes, so now I own those shows outright. Very few of the vintage shows I binge watch have been readily available on streaming. There are often rumors that Moonlighting will pop up somewhere, but it hasn’t yet. Homicide Life On The Street is viewable seemingly only in my house (I even bought the movie/finale on DVD so my set os complete). Westerns are almost impossible to find (Wild Wild West, Bonanza, Have Gun Will Travel… even F Troop). Then there is the nefarious streaming proclivity of only having some episodes of a series available (Happy Days, Wings, Cheers) as if to say, “hey, we’ve literally done the bare minimum for you.”

I don’t know as much about TV series, but classic movies bounce around from platform to platform. I miss a movie on Criterion and it shows up soon after on Max. I have a movie in My Stuff on Max which disappears and IMDB tells me it’s available on Prime.

To make money streaming services have to continually bring new subscribers in and dusty old TV series aren’t going to do it. Pluto or Tubi might have them in the On Demand section. I just wouldn’t expect them in the premium services.

I also think a lot of people are like me: if I saw an old series available that interested me I’d watch an episode or two to scratch my itch. I can’t imagine putting in the time to watch all of the episodes.

Most people are probably like Tom; for me the pleasure comes from satisfying my somewhat neurotic completism, mostly impossible to have done for vintage shows originally prior to at least VCR. For instance I saw a lot of Mannix back in the day in first run, but skipped a lot of episodes, and even whole seasons, for one reason or another. Reruns were out of order and grossly edited for more commercials. I dig going back and taking in the whole thing in sequence.

As per Kevin, the availability of shows does change often, hence my original post. I have done a complete rewatch of Cheers and Wings, since the Pandemic, without any missing episodes. The complete Cheers appears to still be available (Hulu and P+) but no longer Wings. Happy Days is available, but with missing episodes (none from S1)

Wild Wild West is now available on Amazon (may have been part of the recent Mannix, Barnaby Jones release on same service). Have Gun… is (apparently completely) available on Pluto, which does not help me out much, but it is there. Bonanza is one of those programs, like Gunsmoke, with many missing episodes and seasons.

I do think there is a market for complete seasons of vintage programs, especially if they came with DVD like special features and interviews with surviving cast or TV critics.

Oh, also, while still no Moonlighting, Remington Steele is streaming on Amazon…
