Very sad.

Broadcast News is one of my favourite films. And he was just consistently excellent.

RIP.

I am old enough to go back to Altered States, but he will always have a special place in my memory for Body Heat, which I saw just a few years after it first came out in one of the best retro theater double bills ever with Double Indemnity. Also loved him in Gorky Park.

More recently enjoyed his television work in Goliath and Condor.

I previously recommended the BBC Scotland produced movie “The Challenger” starring Hurt as Richard Feynman. I’ll gladly recommend it again.

Completely agree. He was a fantastic Feynman.

Thanks for the recommendation.

Big fan.

Children of a Lesser God = such great work.

My friend Sheila tells her long and amazing story of her encounter with Mr. Hurt.

(Worth reading to the end, at least for the reply from Mitzi Gaynor saying how much she loved the story.)

BTW, another friend did an HBO movie with him and had nothing but good things to say about him.

Somehow I missed this story amidst the #metoo miasma

I remember reading about this years before #metoo. He was an asshole, at least through middle age.

Unlike half my Twitter feed, Matlin gives us permission to acknowledge Hurt was a great actor, even if also an asshole:

“We’ve lost a really great actor and working with him on set in ‘Children of a Lesser God’ will always be something I remember very fondly. He taught me a great deal as an actor and he was one-of-a-kind.”

“Matlin detailed Hurt’s alleged abuse against her in her autobiography, “I’ll Scream Later.” The actor said Hurt “threw me on the bed, started ripping off his clothes and mine” and raped her. Hurt also allegedly berated Matlin after her Oscar win, telling her, “What makes you think you deserve it? There are hundreds of actors who have worked for years for the recognition you just got handed to you. Think about that.”
