And that, a Comcast official told Deadline, is why, for now, the idea of moving major live telecast events strictly online is not being actively pursued.

But in the same article, the head of tech at itv believes that by 2025, "the quality of the experience of [internet-based] services is likely to outstrip broadcast."

Unless something absolutely dramatic happens to the structure of Internet service in the United States between now and 2025, there is a less than zero percent chance Mr Griffiths's prediction will happen here.

The driver to this is getting left behind by the rest of the world. It wasn't that long ago that people were coming from Asia and Europe talking how everybody had 100MB/s service for a cheap monthly fee and US ISPs all pontificated how it was impossible to do in the US. When I went from Comcast to FIOS I went from 3MB/s to 100MB/s for less money than I was paying Comcast. When air travel starts up again and live streaming events are going on in the rest of the world, US ISPs will patiently explain why that can't happen here until the pressure builds up enough to make it happen.

As of today, the solutions to the bottlenecks in the US are supposed to be fixed 5G wireless, which we won’t see until at least mid 2021 and DBS internet using one of a few solutions currently in development (Musk, Zuckerberg)
