To "CBS Mornings," as Nate Burleson (ostensibly continuing his football-TV commitments much like Strahan) joins Tony D and Gayle in the new Times Square studio not far from "GMA"'s...

At least equally newsworthy, Anthony Mason's already outta there. Gee, I didn't realize that he was the reason they're mired in 3rd place. Also heard that CBS says of the rebrand, "this way we align all the branding under CBS News." I still think that these shows are less news and more entertainment and shuld be labeled as such.

Granted, they're news-heavier in the first hour each morning. At least, when they find time to do anything besides clip packages, promos, banter, and commercials (which leaves about half of the hour).

I actually liked it in its original incarnation with Norah O'Donnell, Charlie Rose and Gayle King. It was calmer and more sober than the gigglefests on NBC and ABC.

Then Charlie's off-camera tendencies came out and Norah moved on, and Susan Zirinsky decided that the answer was to build the show around Gayle King. Ugh. I bailed and returned to TV-free mornings.

The show still does solid, in-depth reporting - David Begnaud in hospitals speaking to doctors, nurses and patients on Covid; Anna Werner's investigative consumer reporting; Jericka Duncan on #MeToo; Vladimir Duthiers on Haiti; Anthony Mason's pieces that treat musicians with the respect they deserve - that put it a few steps above its competition. The lack of glitz helps too. (I tried watching GMA this morning for its storm coverage, but the video elements were overbearing.)

But Anthony's departure from the anchor desk (though he'll still be doing his cultural pieces) gives me pause, since his news credentials grounded the whole presentation. Nate is very personable, but he has a tough road ahead of him. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now, but still.
