In a long Facebook post, the "Star Trek:  TNG" star compared Larry David's attack on the "Sesame Street" Muppet beloved by present-day children but hated by Boomers who grew up with BIg Bird and Bert and Ernie when the character and his father appeared on the "Today" show while he was waiting to go on to plug "Curb Your Enthusiasm," comparing it to treatment Wheaton's father gave him as a child--the response has been predictably mixed, with alleged journalist Glenn Greenwald, the former "Democracy Now!" regular turned rightwinger among the more negative towards Wheaton:

In case you forgot, the impetus for Elmo's appearance on "Today" was his Muskmedia account post where he asked people how they were feeling and thousands of people sincerely opened up to the little red-furred Muppet, in some cases in great detail.

Wheaton's not going to like many episodes of The Simpsons.

Joe - "times have changed": https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2023/nov/07/homer-strangle-bart-simpsons

Mark - I don't think Boomers give much of a damn about Elmo one way or the other; it's us GEN-Xers that have an undying hatred for Elmo (or, at least, I did until I became a dad and realized that Sesame Workshop knows what the hell they're doing...)

I long for the days when random outrage wouldn’t go viral and we would not be expected to have opinions about these things.

Wil Wheaton has mental health issues that clearly need to be addressed and dealt with. If Larry David and Elmo hadn’t triggered him, something else would have.

Muppets got hit, thrown, strangled, and blown up countless times over the last sixty years. Broad (often violent) physical comedy is a large part of what they are. David committed no offense that he needs to apologize for. Wheaton needs to take a look inside himself (or better yet have a mental health expert do it) to determine why he reacted the way he did.
