I finally watched this at the weekend. I have enjoyed the books, which have a lot of good jokes hidden within them. But this felt like a very expensive bland cosy crime movie. They had the stars, but the script was poor, and there wasn't enough biting satire which the books do have.
I'm sure that Netflix is hoping this will be a series. The books are massive sellers in the UK, with the fifth in the series having just been published. They're written by Richard Osman, the longtime British TV producer and presenter - currently presenting Richard Osman's House of Games and the celebrity version of the gameshow Pointless. He also is a co-presenter of The Rest is Entertainment podcast which I enjoy. His TV background is reflected in lots of little gags within the books about things like British daytime television.
It is curious seeing Mirren and Brosnan in this, having just seen them with dubious Irish accents in the Paramount+ show Mobland.
