Having watched the pilot, currently free on several services (YouTube link below), it imagines a universe where Blade Runner and Trek coexist. The story takes place two decades after Nemesis, but the focus is on an event that occurred a decade prior to Picard’s present day. I dislike stories told in flashback. But this isn’t quite that. Anyway, it is worth watching.

Kevin - I've watched both episodes 1 & 2 - the story isn't being told in flashback at all.  In fact, I'm not entirely sure where you got that idea - there are a couple of dream sequences wherein Picard interacts with Data, but aside from the cold open of episode 2 (which effectively retells the events of the Short Trek "Children of Mars" from a different perspective), all of the action in the first two episodes takes place in the current timeframe of the show (i.e. 30 yrs on from TNG, 20 years on from Nemesis).  In fact, that's a hallmark of the show - the fact that this Picard is very much wounded by the events of the Romulan supernova (as mentioned in Trek '09) and, after all these years, the death of Data , and yet he's still the idealistic officer who came to represent the better angels of the Federation.

As I said, it wasn’t quite a flashback, but much of the first episode features exposition about the events ten years prior.

By that logic, “Wrath of Khan” was a terrible movie because it keeps referencing Kirk’s marooning of the Botany Bay on Ceti Alpha V ~15 years prior to the start of the film.

I watched Episode 1 and I liked it well enough. The series were always about starships exploring the galaxy and I like this series occupying a different space. I also like that Picard is old, acts old, and isn't going to be the center of action sequences. I was less enamored of the quick cut martial fight sequences but that's just me.

I really liked the banner in the Picard room of Star Fleet archives. That was a great touch.

I have mixed feelings. Parts of it I liked. The martial Arts stuff was bleh. I might watch it some day, but I don't like it enough to subscribe.
This guy recounts several Easter eggs and Trek references in the episode.

I watched the first episode on YouTube and there were a few Easter Egg videos recommended. They're fan made and reward obsessive knowledge. The one I watched was useful for recalling plot points from Nemesis and showing how they continue in Picard. But there was too much speculation about how much you can draw from some set design details.

I wouldn't make the choice of quick cut martial arts for interpersonal unarmed violence relevant to the quality of a show or movie. It's certainly no worse than the haymaker punches thrown in the movies and TV we grew up on and it's immediately familiar to younger audiences who grew up with it in video games, TV, and movies.

After seeing the first three episodes, I like the show so far.

It’s showing that the current Federation isn’t like that nice, clean hotel lobby that was the Enterprise-D anymore.

And if you want the hotel lobby thing, there’s The Orville. Which is a good show in itself.

True, on “Picard” instead of hotel lobbies they use convention center lobbies
