I haven’t watched it, but by all accounts Tiger King includes somebody who most likely murdered somebody or had it done... and yet it is funny?

No. No, it’s not funny. No, it does not include anyone murdering or being murdered.

It includes somebody convicted of attempted murder, and somebody about whom there is gossip killed someone.

I have some interest in true crime, and kind of liked the earlier cultural sensation on Netflix. But Tiger King was a train wreck. The unfortunate subjects appear to have been badly exploited and distorted by the filmmakers, but are all, without exception, so unlikable that it is hard to feel sorry or outrage for them, or anything other than self-loathing for watching it.

On Thursday's WTF Marc Maron talked to documentary filmmaker Liz Garbus. He brought up Tiger King and she said she was more interested in talking about her own films rather than that. Maron described it as "Broken people doing shitty things." That about sums it up.

It's like they dug through my social media accounts and based the casting decisions on whom I most loathe.

I didn't watch the original and have even less interest in this.

Cleaning out the inbox with the Variety ____, Dean "Mayhem" Winters ("Girls5eva") cast as Joe's partner-turned-enemy Jeff Lowe.

I watched the documentary series which was a two hour story told in eight hours. With all its flaws the documentary didn't lay any overt bias on the story, picking heroes and villains. Marc Maron described the series (without having watched it) as broken people doing shitty things. You can't turn that into a drama. The audience needs someone to root for and that will pervert the whole concept.

I absolutely agree with your premise, but the lack of likable characters doesn’t seem to have impacted shies like “The Crown” or “Mare of Easttown” or “Dirty John.” I personally don’t understand the phenomena of shows with nobody to root for, but a lot of them are in the pipeline these days.

I've heard of two of those shows and not seen any of them so I'll stipulate your point. I also thought of Succession but that is a satire and that might let them get away with it.

Amazon agrees. They're shelving it, Cage suggested in a Variety chat. He's moving on to another project, where he'll play... a version of himself.   ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
