The ads were mostly meh. Honorable mention to the Dave Grohl Canada commercial. The halftime show was mostly meh. Honorable mention to the flying platforms. The game was at least close, but I’m blind in one eye yet even I could see a few genuinely bad calls that impacted the outcome. --

All the channels available to me in Canada did not provide the USA commercials.   I think we got a couple of them, but not all.

Halftime show was quite the logistical, lighting, and cable performance.  Her voice was amazing as well.

The best thing Fox could put on after the Super Bowl was yet another Gordon Ramsey show?  It seems this timeslot is not the big deal it used to be.

My non-scientific observations of American football are that games played without mistakes (from players or referees) don't get that much attention.  They also seem very rare.

When was the last time Super Bowl commercials were really entertaining? It may have been 1984. There is no bigger success in the history of American advertising than the creation and perpetuation of the myth that more people watch the SB for the commercials than the game. This is the only game all year I watch completely live,  not because I want to watch the ads (I do not) but because I have too many friends and family who are casual sports fans who try to contact me during the game  with spoiling comments if I am an hour behind to allow for commercial zapping.

Strongly disagree that the defensive holding call at the end was bad. It clearly was holding (the defender himself admitted it after the game), and probably prevented the Chiefs from scoring a TD on the play. Fans (and Fox Analyst Greg Olsen, who himself did not have a great game) may have been disappointed they were robbed of a more dramatic ending, but real life is often like that. The biggest impact of the penalty was that, without the Hold KC would likely have scored a TD, allowing the Eagles to get the ball with enough time for a potentially dramatic game tying (or winning) drive.

My favorite commercial was the "triangle player" commercial for Doritos. The "triangle player of the year" reveal at the end really made me laugh hard. I liked the Dunkin' commercial too.

I wasn't crazy about Rihanna - the dancing and the spectacle were good, but the music did nothing for me. And as Darlene Love wrote, "Hmm … I have mixed feelings about Rihanna’s halftime performance… was expecting a high energy performance like Beyoncé, Bruno Mars, Janet Jackson and JLo."
Chris Stapleton was superb. Sheryl Lee Ralph was good but the lip syncing took me out of it.

As for the game - as a Philadelphian and a big Eagles fan, I have to admit that the holding call was not the deciding factor. The biggest factor in the loss was that the Eagles' defense, one of the best in the league, made almost no big plays to stop the Chiefs. They got outplayed/outcoached in that area, and when the Chiefs started making big plays in the second half the Eagles had no way to stop them. The second biggest factor was the slippery field, which the Chiefs were prepared for (the Chiefs equipment manager had been "in constant communication with the groundscrew all week and knew the Chiefs would need the seven-stud cleats for the field Sunday," said CBS Sports)  and the Eagles were not (Hurts changed cleats at one point because he hadn't expected the field conditions).
Overall, though, a pretty good game. Hard to see my team lose, but I can't deny that the Chiefs played better.

A local TV critic noted that the production values of SB commercials used to be so much higher than they were for TV series and that made them stand out so much more.

When there’s a big controversy over a referee’s call in a big game I assume it’s coming from bettors who lost money from the decision. I don’t think that’s the case here but that affects the amount of attention I give to the complaints.

I don’t normally watch the halftime show. Yesterday I did while making and eating a late dinner. I have heard of Rihanna, I don’t know her catalog, and there was nothing in the performance that made me want to learn more.

Yesterday’s game was a rare one that lived up to the hype. The best two teams in the league played and they kept it close to the end.

So, I am not a big Rihanna guy, but let’s give her some credit; she performed before the biggest live TV audience of the year pregnant. The set and supporting cast were spectacular, but her moves and energy were muted. I think we can forgive that.

Also, she has not toured for 7 years or performed live for 4 years. Even the Beatles were a little freaked out in similar circumstances.

It won’t go down as one of the best Half time Shows, but not the worst either.
