But organizers added, "cancellation is not an option."

Comcast and Discovery reiterate that their investments are protected by insurance.

That sort of statement from them pisses me off, because — and this should be obvious — cancellation IS an option. They are only games.

I feel obligated to quote Harry Shearer: "The Olympics: It's a movement, and everyone needs one!

Teams still have to be chosen and the athletes need to train to be at peak shape for the games. And, of course, the participating countries can’t be under lockdown. If the games were to take place at the originally scheduled time they’d be a farce.

I think it's pretty clear that they won't be happening this summer. I expect that they want that extra month to work out whether the delay should be until later this year (v unlikely), next summer, or even summer 2022 which somehow feels more realistic. And because FIFA was corrupt, the 2022 World Cup in Qatar isn't until the northern hemisphere winter, so there's room that summer for the games without too much of a clash with other sports.

Of course sports aren't necessary. Neither are late night chat shows or just about anything we discuss in this group. But that doesn't mean that millions or in the Olympics' case, billions, don't enjoy them. And we're really going to want these sort of things once we're through this!

I've seen multiple reports come through in the last 30 minutes or so that an IOC official is on record as saying the Tokyo games are on hold until 2021 - but I think we're still waiting for an official statement from the IOC.

It's basically all sourced back to this Christine Brennan interview with Dick Pound, the Canadian IOC rep:  https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/olympics/2020/03/23/olympics-2020-ioc-member-tokyo-games-postponed-dick-pound-coronavirus/2899848001/

If the games did go ahead this July, it would just spark up the 'rona spread again.  I sure hope the games are deferred until 2021.
