Who cares? Even people with brains make unfortunate decisions in their business and have to backpedal if they want to be sustainable.

Not sure whether the “who cares” is hyperbolic, but there is a reasonable argument to be made (being made by many) that Musk bought Twitter deliberately to wreck it, just to amuse himself. But even if he is just making a bad business decision, forcing people (in particular government officials) to pay for verification will end the argument that Twitter (or any social media) is a public utility.

Remember that for twitter the advertisers are the clients and the users are the product. If the power users who drive engagement find the service to be unbearable whether due to vicious trolling or impersonators, they will leave, their followers will leave, and advertisers will abandon the platform.

If hate speech overwhelms the platform, advertisers will abandon it. To make Twitter what it was took a lot of money and effort. Trying to make radical changes in a short period will probably wreck it and Elon’s business record shows he’s not completely in the dark about how to keep it running, which means he’ll go back on a lot of these pronouncements.

I say “who cares?” because twitter has no institutional depth. There’s a small number of people who based their businesses on Twitter and they’ll suffer if it gets wrecked. But the vast majority of users can abandon the platform and wait for engineers to develop a better one. The strength of a social media platform is in its networks, not its software.

Then this happened: 

Over the last 24 hours, several verified accounts changed their names to “Elon Musk” and began Tweeting endorsements of progressive politicians and mocking all things Elon Musk related. Valleri Bertinelli was particularly amusing. Long story short, Musk suspended countless users and has created a new policy that prevents people from taking advantage of his stupidity.

All of the CBS O&O affiliates stopped using Twitter nearly 24 hours ago.
