I remember occasionally watching the Joey Bishop show as a kid, but don’t really have distinct memories of Regis from back then. Those begin with his AM Los Angeles show, I think when I was in jr and sr high school. After that, my main exposure to him was as a regular guest with Dave. Dave had  a handful of regular male guests that I disliked intensely (Phil, Richard, Trump of course) and were the only reasons I would ever turn Dave off. At first I had Regis in that same category, but over time I came to appreciate Regis for his wit and broadcasting skills, and he was clearly in a much more competent and likable level than the other guys, even if there were always some things I did not like about him.

Regis had a rare talent of being high energy and not self conscious when he was on camera, no matter if he had something prepared or he had to talk spontaneously. Almost everybody gets self conscious when they see the red light on a TV camera and they might need a few seconds to get beyond it and start talking. Regis could just go without a second thought. That's what made him a good talk show host and especially a good fill-in talk show guest. If he didn't have anything to promote or any reason to be in the news it didn't matter. Just bring him on the show and let him go for a segment.

Letterman compared him to the best, and Variety added their chat (not from Donz) from 9/17/01...

One of the depressingly-enduring myths of programming/web development is that people in the field can work 60-70 hours a week without a problem. What happened was that, in the early days, the people who got into it were (and I say this with total love) freaks of nature who could do that because they're freaks of nature. But the overlords went "Well, if they can work *everyone* should be able to work 60-70 hours a week. Except for study after study proving that it doesn't work: people, in general, can only do about 40-50 hours a week (if that).

I say only partially tongue-in-cheek that everything that's gone wrong with game shows in the past two decades is because when Millionaire took off like a rocket, everyone thought "See: you don't need a traditional host to host a game show!" Which conveniently omits that the host was Regis Philbin: a freak of nature. And they assumed that everyone's a freak, when, in fact, they aren't.

He was a good entertainer. Someone said he holds the world record for most hours on TV of anyone? May he rest in peace.

That 16,000+-hour figure was from 2011, which reportedly took in all the "Millionaires," but remember he did come back to Kathie Lee to fill in for Hoda...

The “Live With”‘ Show site has clips from Monday’s show, with a few clips from the original WABC-TV Morning Show.

WABC’s coverage included a stand up from their front door, where there’s a plaque with Regis’ puss on it.

Speaking of Regis and Trump...

Last Friday "Live" reran Regis' last show from November 2011. Having watched it the first time it aired, I remembered a funny moment: just after the hosts sit down, Kelly mentions that the audience is filled with friends and "big stars," and Regis retorts: "What big stars?! Tony Danza is the biggest star here!!" It gets a big laugh and applause, and the camera cuts to Tony laughing and whistling in the audience. Then back to the hosts, as Kelly leans over to Regis and says "Donald Trump was VERY offended by that." Cut to Trump in the audience laughing.

On last Friday's rerun, Kelly's joke was cut out. So they cut from Tony whistling to Trump laughing, then back to the hosts.

BTW, when the repeat started I wondered if I would be able to pick out Trump in the crowd, and I did so immediately... thanks to that stupid, long red tie. It really makes him stand out. Kind of like a clown's red nose.
