The purple dinosaur beloved by 80s and 90s pre-schoolers and hated by anyone older than 6 is returning to television with a new animated series that will air on Warners Discovery's Cartoonito pre-school block on Cartoon Network and streamed on Max's Cartoonito hub--Mattel, the company that currently owns the rights to Barney and produces "Barney's World" with Canada's Nelvana, will present a refreshed look at the annoyingly upbeat character:
Created by Texas housewife Sheryl Leach, Barney first gained popularity in a series of videos as a costumed character interacting with live kids (which included future stars Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato) that later became a highly successful PBS series (which led some to question that PBS had lowered its standards regarding children's programming) that eventually had served its purpose and went off of the PBS Kids schedule, like most of its shows other than "Arthur" and "Sesame Street." It has appeared on other cable channels and online, but its popularity as a costumed character waned some years ago and Mattel and WBD think they can make him popular again as a cartoon.
