CBS and DCP will fill the October timeslot with a 50th-anny special featuring "themed highlights from AMAs’ expansive show archives, each culminating with an original performance or artist interview." As of now, the next actual AMA ceremony will be in 2025, moved to the spring within a few months of the Grammys...
Didn't they hold these in the winter, or am I confusing them with another awards show?

Per the Wikimachine, the AMAs were held in January or February until 2003; it then shifted to a late November slot in 2003, where it remained until 2022.  There was no show last year.

When I used to work on it, it was marketed as “The first award show of the year!!!”

But they struggled to hire production staff willing to work Christmas prepping the show, and usually the same people were already committed to New Years Rocking Eve. Dick Clark’s company (which produces both) has been known to hire people for two shows simultaneously, only paying them for one show, and paying them well below industry standard.

But I’m not bitter.
