As a graduate of and a resident in the easternmost outpost of the soon-to-be Hateful Eight Conference, I’ve been hearing/reading nothing but all week.

Of particular note:
The ACC, whose footprint we most snugly reside, has rejected WVU’s overtures several times in the past. If we can’t somehow talk our way into the B1G or the SEC instead, our $35-40M take could become $20M in the H8 or $7M in the American.

But as our PBP guy/statewide sports show host clichéd, “It’s a marathon story, not a sprint.”

I'll give ESPN credit for straight up reporting the story. The NCAA is filled with so much rot that it's becoming hard to see how much farther they can go before they collapse under all that corruption.

No disrespect to West Virginia, but WVU needs the ACC a lot more than the ACC needs WVU.

The last round of conference realignments was all about bringing in TV markets. Texas probably brings in enough viewers to make them attractive to the SEC, even if the conference has to take Oklahoma as part of the deal.

But, while WVU's teams would fit solidly into the ACC, I doubt that the conference is especially anxious to give the university millions to get the ACC Network onto systems in West Virginia.

I hope that WVU finds a good place to land; we'll see how it plays out.

I could (but don’t) fork out the extra dough to get the Sports tier on Suddenlink (ACC=405). And no doubt my country relations on the ridge could chip in for the extra package on Dish or Direct. But the future is streaming, which is where the Big 12 Network can be found. That poses a problem in WV, as the state ranks low for reliable broadband coverage.

We’ll see how it plays out; our athletic director is a former associate commissioner in the ACC, and the university has been promoting its academic bona fides in the social mediasphere. (Those twenty-some Rhodes Scholars just don’t appear overnight....)
