Rip Taylor was on the short list of Tonight Show guests who would get called in to cover when another guest cancelled. Like Richard Simmons, rarely did he have anything specific to promote; he was simply an affable character who knew how to work a crowd. As an NBC Page, I could sit back and relax if I encountered him in the hallways while I was leading a tour. He’d pull off his hairpiece and crack a joke and before anyone knew it, 15 minutes would have passed.

I remember Rip going on "American Bandstand" a few times in the late seventies - and I don't remember anyone else doing standup on that show. Must have been another instance of a guest canceling. But, as always, he was pretty damn funny.
