I’m not sure if I have watched a single show on the CW, but I have some interest in this. I notice first that while my perception that CW programs for teens and YAs is correct, the average CW viewer is 58. The article says this helps explain why they still operate in the Red, and that this is going to change under new regime.

It sounds like the plan is to use CW to extend the reach of NewsNation and the younger Cuomo, and that after this programming year CW will transition to cheaper, unscripted programming, presumably targeting the older viewers who still watch news on television.

Since that plan sounds similar to WBD’s approach, and would conflict with CNN, it seems likely Discovery at least will be out of the CW business entirely as soon as possible. And while WBD did not get any cash for its share of CW so far, being able to get some of that debt off their books is as good or better than cash for them.

I would like to know if the average age they quoted is for the network programming they run from 8 to 10 every night or the affiliates that carry those programs.  Looking at WCIU, the C-Dub affil in Chicago, the schedule around the network is a lot of court shows (including "Judge Judy" reruns), Springer (both the talk show and "Judge Jerry") and Wilkos, "Cheaters" reruns, shares with CBS station WBBM (Dr. Phil and Drew Barrymore--she's on after the network on weeknights) and "Two Broke Girls" and "Seinfeld" reruns.  I'm not really sure whether any of that programming is "Dare to Defy" with the CW lineup (but perhaps the kids are watching the C-Dub scripted shows on streaming--and the older series are still running on Netflix--"Riverdale"'s most recent season dropped on Netflix last week and is in the top 10 of TV shows, as is most of the C-Dub scripted shows they still carry and will carry until cancelled).

I was wondering that too, though with that non-prime lineup the YA schedule is probably just lowering the overall mean age to 58 from 72.

In any case, I imagine in 2-3 years the schedule will all be cheap non scripted and syndicated reruns, built around the newscast and maybe a few news related programs they develop.

If I had access to the suggestion box at Nexstar HQ, I’d submit a 30-minute nightly newscast from NewsNation on the CW at 10/9 (either simulcast or stand-alone), with the option for a local newscast to follow.

Obviously, there are issues - among them, ad revenue-sharing and cross-ownership promotion (e.g., my Nexstar-owned CBS affiliate promoting the nightly Nexstar network news airing on the Gray-owned CW outlet) - but the facilitator told us “there are no bad ideas.”

The question is if Nexstar wants to do more station buying to get CW affils.  I would be curious if in Chicago they would want to buy WCIU if they can't void the affiliation agreement to get the network back on WGN, which might entail buying all of Weigel Broadcasting, meaning that after the purchase they would have to sell stations in NY, LA and SF to keep WPIX, KTLA and KRON (and move the C-Dub affil to MyTV affil --yes, it's still around--KRON) and possibly merge MeTV and Antenna TV.
