I just hope to God they use some restraint with those cameras. Sometimes the enthusiasm with new gadgets gets away with them and they have to show that angle all the time.

Great: another pointless camera angle to delay coaches challenges.

I saw a game with this camera a year or so ago. It didn't help with
goal line at all, but in one sideline call, two other cameras made it
look like the ref was a complete dolt and the pylon sideline camera
showed the ref got it right. This may be more than just a gimmick.

I actually thought CBS did pretty well at showing restraint on its use in last night's matchup between the Chiefs and the Colts, although I did notice one gratuitous shot of the pylon getting knocked over when it was otherwise irrelevant to the play. And in last night's case, a touchdown call got reversed when the pylon cam captured the player's knee on the turf before the ball crossed the goal line, and it looked to me like that call would have stood without it because of the runner's body blocking the view of the ball from any camera mounted much higher.

There is a spectacular example of the pylon camera working properly in today's Alabama-Georgia game and there was one on the Thursday night football game as wel..

Ed. note: Alabama-LSU.

The LSU receiver in question was Thad Moss, son of Randy (DuPont HS c/o 95), whose play was a surprise addition to ESPN’s weekly “You got Mossed!” segment.
