An interesting observation from Mark Malkoff.

I’m going to guess it’s nothing. If there was a chance Seth wants to continue and NBC isn’t interested, his agent would be spreading the word around town and in the media to put pressure on NBC. If Seth weren’t interested in continuing he would let his viewers know.

And the 800 pound gorilla in this is Lorne. NBC wouldn’t want to make him angry as his company produces Late Night.

I think the question is, are they arguing over how much of a raise, or how much of a pay cut, is he going to get.

I was unable to find ratings for Meyers. I wonder how much Fallon's sagging ratings hurt Meyers?

I wonder how much social media virosity or YouTube views fit into decisions like "worth" in contract context.

I'm guessing it's a small percentage like 2%.

If there were a conflict, one or both of the sides would be leaking to the media in order to control the narrative. If NBC was calling on Meyers to take a pay cut in order to continue hosting we'd hear it. If Meyers was unhappy with NBC or the proposed deal there would be rumors around that he was willing to leave Late Night if only to get a sense of how much money would be out there if he jumped to Comedy Central or TBS or whoever.

If NBC wants to cut the budget for the show they could continue with remote interviews once the pandemic is suppressed. Suddenly yanking a host and replacing him with a new host without preparing the audience would be fatal for the show. Plus I just checked Sue Trowbridge's late night lineups page and Meyers has new shows next week. That's not a sign his dismissal is imminent.
