Not from the virus. His telecast appearances weren't much following his 70s/80s successes until just the last five or so years, when various documentaries, including one about the first record-company boss he worked for, Clarence Avant, started appearing... spotted him on a 2015 Colbert Late Show, tho apparently not joining Ed Sheeran as a musical guest, which would have been an impressive combo...

In LA Monday (3/27); 81.


The late, great NY radio star Dan Ingram (possibly among others) liked to loop the "I know" repetition from Withers' first hit "Ain't No Sunshine," not an easy feat given the industry was dependent on magnetic tape in those years...

Born in rural Raleigh County, he was a charter member of the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame in 2007. (He also received gratuitous mentions during today’s daily gubernatorial briefing.)

If you listen to this, you'll hear Mr. Withers say that he stopped singing about 30 years ago because of osteomastitis.
