Piers Morgan quits/is fired from morning show

After mocking the suicidal thoughts uttered during Oprah’s interview with the formerly royal couple.

I can think of about two dozen things Morgan has said and done prior to these comments that should’ve gotten him banned from all media forever. Sadly, I’m sure he will end o in NewsMax or OANN or some such BS.

For the record, the interview last night got 12m or so viewers. Not bad for a country of ~60m. ITV showed it, and it was on their Good Morning Britain programme yesterday that Morgan let rip. They were discussing the interview having seen a US feed, but ahead of the UK airing later yesterday evening.

This morning, Morgan was strongly challenged by the weather presenter on GMB. I pointedly never watch the show, so I don't know him. But he was clearly speaking from the heart. (He posted on Twitter subsequently, just don't bother reading any replies: https://twitter.com/alexberesfordTV/status/1369268366586839041)

Morgan stormed off the set of his own show - video can easily be found, as here on The Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/media/2021/mar/09/ofcom-investigating-gmb-piers-morgan-comments-harry-meghan-sussexes. He did return sometime later.

Then the respected UK mental health charity, Mind released a statement expressing a lot of disappointment at Morgan - https://twitter.com/MindCharity/status/1369003597103529985. ITV has for the last few months been running a major campaign in partnership with Mind called "Britain Get Talking" helping support those with mental health issues during Covid-19. It literally appears on-screen at the start of every ITV show and coming out of every ad-break. So having your big breakfast show presenter at odds with your major charity is awkward to say the least.

I guess Morgan walked before he was forcibly pushed through the door, but I would say that ITV could have sent a stronger message and actually fire him. Morgan also presents a one-on-one interview show for ITV, so I guess that might still be in place. That said, I would think most potential interviewees might now want to have a conversation with their agent before going on it.

As for Morgan? I've no doubt he'll pop up somewhere. There are two "news" networks staffing up at the moment in the UK. There's GB News which is being run by Andrew Neil (right wing, but a good tough interviewer) and backed by Discovery. Then there's Murdoch's new channel News UK TV. When I say that they're "news" channels ("hot-takes 24/7!"), I really mean that they'll all attempt to ape Fox News within the constraints of the UK broadcast system which does require balance. I say that, but the Murdoch channel may stick with OTT distribution, which gets around those rules. 

Anyway, I can easily see either of those channels digging deep to pay for Morgan, although I'm not sure whether there is any enmity between Morgan and either Neil or Murdoch. The  UK press world being so insular, both Neil and Morgan have worked as editors on Murdoch titles in the past.

I saw a Tweet from him earlier to the effect he is not really against everyone who experiences suicidal ideation asking for help, just Meghan Markle.

What I don’t understand is the widespread surprise that “The Firm”, or Institutional British Royal Establishment, is laced with healthy dollops of frank racism. With all due respect to the loyal and patriotic subjects of the Queen here on the list, and acknowledging that race-based prejudice was arguably invented here in the Colonies, how could a system based on the assumption of the inherent and inherited superiority of a particular line of European clans be anything other than racist (among other horrid things)?

While most of the UK watches "Breakfast" on BBC1 instead.

The previous Ofcom record was over two "Celebrity Big Brother" housemates in 2007 making derogatory comments about an East Indian actor.  As you can see, there is an underlying theme here.

I would just be enormously wary about these numbers of complaints. Large numbers of complaints always suggests some kind of organised campaign somewhere. And of course surprisingly easy to do on social media.

The other thing to say is that it doesn't actually matter. Ofcom only needs to have a single complaint - or none at all if it's "monitoring" the programme - and they can take action. Having tens of thousands of complaints shouldn't matter.

And I say all this being in complete agreement with those who think Morgan abused his position and complained about him.

The fact that a white guy accused of being a racist thinks it is a good idea to make his first interview Tucker Carlson is both self condemning, and revealing of everything you need to know about the nature of white nationalism.
