unexpected exception at tvb_start

Hi TVB peeps,

I've been trying to get into TVB, but I'm failing at the very first steps. I've seen posts about similar issues in the group, but the suggestions there haven't solved my problem. I have checked that my computer fulfills the requirements, and it seems that it does. I'm on Chrome Version 96.0.4664.45 (Official Build) (64-bit) and on Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS. Just in case the graphics card is relevant, the output of

lspci | grep VGA

is

2b:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GP108 [GeForce GT 1030] (rev a1)

So here's what happens. I download TVB, run ./tvb_start.sh, and the browser window opens to the initial setup. My Matlab path and my DB connection URL validate just fine. I've tried different things with the username and email, as well as removing the Matlab path as was suggested in another post, but I invariably get the message 

"An unexpected exception appeared. Please check the log files." 

However, the log files don't exist - although the home/TVB folder was created, there is no logs subfolder, only a file named tvb-database.db.

Don't know if it's relevant, but in the terminal, I get a bunch of messages like this one:

2021-12-07 19:07:59,903 - WARNING - tvb.config.init.introspector_registry - Skipped Adapter(probably because MATLAB not found):<class 'tvb.adapters.analyzers.bct_degree_adapters.StrengthWeights'>

(and many more where StrengthWeights is replaced by other things). This is before I validate the Matlab path.

Any ideas why this is happening?

Hi Katharina,

I suggest you try to run tvb_clean.sh once, and then tvb_start.sh again.

On the settings page:

- The user&password do not need to match anything on your machine or on TVB side. I suggest something simple to remember, if it will be only a local installation on your laptop.

- Matlab field empty will be good for start, to avoid running into trouble there. You can always fill its path from tvb settings page at a later point.

- Try with an sqlite DB first.

- Press Apply button on the right

In case the problem persist, please share logs from under ~/TVB/logs, or from ~/.tvb-temp/ 

The Warning with Skipped Adapter can be ignored at this point.

And please make sure you have the latest TVB_Distribution version 2.4.1

Thanks! Unfortunately the exception is still happening. I'm sharing the logs I found them in the .tvb-temp folder. There seems to be an error in web_application.log, maybe that's it?

Hi Katharina,

The log files you post mention a TEMP folder that should be present when you first run the TVB and save the settings.  

Can you try again the clean command, and additionally delete manuall (some are hidden files/folders, please use the command to delete or a tool that shows them even when hidden, like terminal):

~/.tvb.configuration 

~/TVB 

~/.tvb-temp 

and then try to start TVB again?

In case someone else runs into this issue: The problem was the ~/TVB folder. I deleted it, followed your instructions from the previous message, and was then able to login.
