Hi,

I upgraded my Ubuntu from 16.04 to 18.04, and now, when logging in, I get the above message on a black screen. If I close it the black screen remains and a mouse pointer I can move, nothing else. With Ctrl-Alt-F1 I get a shell, from where I can reboot. I read about two unset lines in ~/.vnc/xstartup.turbovnc. But these are present here. What is going wrong here?

Many thanks for any help!

Just to make sure we're on the same page, did you upgrade the server to
TurboVNC 2.2 and remove ~/.vnc/xstartup.turbovnc so that that script
will be upgraded the next time you start a TurboVNC session? Both will
be necessary in order to get the window manager under Ubuntu 18.04 to
work properly with TurboVNC.

Hi DRC,

yes, I upgraded to TurboVNC 2.2 two weeks before upgrading Ubuntu to
18.04. But removing ~/.vnc/xstartup.turbovnc I missed, since I didn't
know (or forgot), that this must be done. I just renamed it so that it
cannot be found anymore. After rebooting the host it was recreated. But
when logging in now from remote a standard desktop is started instead of
MATE which I prefer.

On page

https://turbovnc.org/Documentation/Compatibility22

you just posted in your last mail for sreerampa for my preferred window
manager configuration Ubuntu 18.04 and MATE 1.20.x I found the command

> export TVNC_WM=mate-session

My Question is: Where do I have to place this command so that it takes
effect when activating the tvnc session both on the local screen and
from remote? Is it needed by the tvnc server or only by the tvnc viewer?
Perhaps you remember on my host the tvnc server is automatically started
at boot time (see threat "Is it possible to start vncserver
automatically at boot time?"). Here are some candidates I know:

/etc/sysconfig/tvncservers
/etc/init.d/tvncserver?
/opt/TurboVNC/bin/vncserver
~/.vnc/xstartup.turbovnc

Best regards

TVNC_WM will only control the window manager in the TurboVNC session,
not the "local" display on the TurboVNC host.

Oops. Yes, that was a legitimate oversight on my part. I've added a
new option to vncserver (-wm) that allows TVNC_WM to be set from the
command line. You should now be able to add that option to the
VNCSERVERARGS[] array in your tvncservers file, using the latest 2.2.x
stable pre-release build from:

https://turbovnc.org/DeveloperInfo/PreReleases

NOTE: only the server is needed from the pre-release build. You can
still use the 2.2 viewer.

Let me know if it works. You can also now specify the equivalent of
TVNC_WM in /etc/turbovncserver.conf (system-wide) or
~/.vnc/turbovncserver.conf (per-user.)

I'm going to look into a better way of deploying xstartup.turbovnc in
the next major release.

Hi DRC,

many thanks for your reply and sorry for the delay.

In the meanwhile I'm quite familiar with the new standard desktop of
Ubuntu 18.04. Since it is compatible with TurboVNC again (other than
Unity of Ubuntu 16.04) I don't need to use MATE anymore. So I also don't
need to set TVNC_WM using your new -wm Option now. But it surely will be
useful for many other TurboVNC users in future.

Best regards

Torsten
