The diving pelican photo is a composite of seven images taken about 1/10th of a second apart. The separate images were combined in Photoshop.

I believe the insect is a blue bottle fly.

You can tell it’s a fly, not a bee, because it has two wings, not four. The back wings of flies are adapted to “halteres,” — spherical gyroscope-like things that are not normally seen.
