Discussion about the 2016 Peaks to Portland swim.

NOTE registration will open on 2/22 at 7am EST.  If you're thinking about signing up, mark your calendars as this race has filled up fast in the past!  (Thanks, Doug!)

The money raised for the YMCA Peaks to Portland Swim to Benefit Kids is crucial for the YMCA of Southern Maine to be able to help all kids reach their full potential through programs like swim lessons, summer camp, and child care.  We believe that together we can help all youth reach their full potential!

A 2.4 mile swim from Peaks Island to East End Beach in Portland, we encourage participation from all people ages 16 and older with a variety of fitness levels and competitive experiences.  We encourage anyone who can swim a mile in less than 40 minutes to join us for this unforgettable swim across the shipping channel in Casco Bay to East End Beach!  It will be an open water swim of a life-time and raises money for a great cause!

Yikes, entries sold out in under 3.5 hours today.

I'm signed up and I understand Doug Moore and Ingrid Hatton are also.

Any other TRIDEXXers?

Great!

Penny, Jon:  Are you going to have a kayaker or go without?

I'm also in! This will be my second year of the Peaks. Looking forward to it!
If anyone is interested, I'm swimming with a Masters Team at the Westbrook Community Center on Tuesday/Thursday mornings. John Smith, coach of the Westbrook Seals runs the workouts. We are usually in the pool at 5:45 a.m. and it ends at 7 a.m.

Yes, I'm planning on using a kayaker. I find it hard to sight from the water.  Last year we had a tanker which helped but I'm guessing it won't be there again this year!

So cool that we've got a great group doing Peaks together!   And I'm planning on having a kayaker too.

Mary, I actually started my swim training this morning at Westbrook CC and took a few minutes to finally meet and talk to John (as it turns out they're also swimming on Wednesday mornings!).  He was very nice and welcoming.  I haven't decided if I'm going to just swim on my own or join up with the group yet...  Going to see how my morning schedule evolves first.  Plus M/W/F tends to work better for my training plan at the moment... So we'll see :)   In any case, I'm planning to be at the pool at least a couple times a week in the morning.

Oh, and I'm already excited for when it's warm enough (and light enough in the AM) to start up our open-water swim group again!!!!   Already have several people committed (myself, Joe, Lynn, and Ann so far).  If anyone else might be interested let me know and I'll make sure to reach out when we're getting started.

I will have a kayaker this year.  This will be my fourth year.

How is everyone's training going for P2P?  I've been getting in 1-2 open water swims each week which has worked really well.  I'm well ahead of where I was last year at this time so feeling good and ready.

Also, any tips on decorating the kayak/kayaker to make them easier to find from the water?

Getting excited!

My wife, Jen, is aiming to paddle over to Peaks island from East End beach in the morning instead of putting the kayak on the ferry.  At this point one or two other people may be meeting her there to do this (Julie Forsyth's husband Matt, and Ingrid Hatton's husband Gabe).  Is anyone else interested in meeting up?  If yes I can post more information as the plan solidifies.

Good luck to everyone swimming!

Everyone else please keep fingers crossed for good weather!

Congratulations to all our swimmers that completed the Peaks to Portland race last weekend!   A particular congratulations to Marcy Scharf who was the 3rd place women’s finisher (!!!) and also won her age group!  Awesome!  After forecasts for thunderstorms earlier in the week, the weather turned out beautiful and the water was great.  Overall it was an excellent day to swim!

Also, a special thanks to Erika McCoy, Trisha and Angus Rose for coming down to cheer us on at the finish!

(I hope I didn’t miss anyone!)
