Hi,
No one ( including scholars well-known or little-known ) knows
exactly who built the Nanphaya Temple because of the lack of concrete,
tangible documents. All the facts and figures about it are scholarly
drawn guesstimations based on its architecture and its stone carvings
and ohters found there. But one thing, almost cent per cent sure for
most scholars, is that it was founded in the early period__ 1 story
low lying building, perforated windows, the combination of porch, hall
and shrine just to mention a bit.
No mural paintings are found there but very very few remaining
blurred unclear murals are impossible to be reclaimed, claimed to be
that of the paintings of boxers or wrestlers which can be observed so
far only at (1) the temple no.1255 about 100ft to the south of Nagayon
Temple, to the east of Soemingyi pagoda complex, (2) roughly the
southern shrine of the Dhammarazaka/razika Stupa in Bagan.
In fact, the scholars have been debating whether or not Nanphaya
is a Buddhist or Hindu temple. One of the reasons is that the figure
of Brahma at the Buddhist monuments of Bagan, is almost always
depicted holding an umbrella together with that of Indra holding a
conch in most cases. But this is the different case for the 8 Brahma
figures at Nanphaya Temple. There are other things to be considered
but for the time being, I am sharing with you just a part of a whole
to think of.
Thanks, best regards and please respect oneself not to mislead those
who are willing to learn the truth!
Hpoun Kyaw
Ps; What I have just mentioned above is the outcome of my discussion
with Ko Thant Zaw, the son-in-law of Minbu U Aung Kyaing and other
reliable resources, for those not to be misled by so-called
self-claimed scholars.
