New Myki validators are being rolled out across the system (trams, buses, railway stations).

I think these are necessary to enable swiping of credit cards - a long overdue upgrade to the system.

This one was on a C1 (Citadis) on Rt 48 on Collins St today.

The old validators, which have had performance problems with the Desfire Myki cards from the start, probably just didn't have the processing power to do a 'contactless' transaction in an acceptable timeframe. It's also possible that the vendor wasn't supporting them anymore, so spares were becoming hard to get.  Even discounting the software issues, not being able to easily get parts anymore would be a major issue and some sort of replacement would need to be obtained, have software written for and tested anyway.
