Scrolling through some old photos I found the attached pic of Melbourne
881 in LaTrobe St. some 20 years ago.

The car, now restored (and improved by those clever Kiwis) now runs in
Auckland on the repeatedly resurrected Dockline Tramway.

Yep! She does a good trade most sundays. 881 normally comes out in foul weather or busy event weekends whereas 466 (Briefly renumbered as Auckland 257) is the main runner.

With the idea that Dockline would be extended to downtown Auckland and mirror what they have in ChCh, I think the logic was that full drop windows would allow for picture views of the area as opposed to the intrusive bars of the original windows. I could be wrong but from memory that was the reason.

They are a regular source of problems on SW6 and later trams - with rust in the lower pane frame and jamming on the middle frame.

The 881 design is more like the original SW5s - and Sydney's R and R1 class trams and IMHO looks a lot better.

Mal Rowe - who reckons the best looking SW6 was 850 for that reason.
